![]() As much as one would think the ATC200 would steal the lime light from the ATC185, the smaller engined trike remained in the Honda lineup as just that, a smaller displacement model for several years to come. It wasn't long until Honda upgraded the ATC yet again, bumping the displacement up as they introduced the ATC200. The S designated the model as a sleeker, sportier design with a few refinements not quite blatant to the uninformed. The larger displacement ATC performed well beyond the capabilities of the venerable ATC90/110 as a load hauling, farm cruising, trailer pulling utility trike! Also of note were the various utility rack accessories available from both Honda and aftermarket manufactures to equip the ATC185 for utility use.Īs the trend goes, the ATC185 had a short year before it was renamed the ATC185S. The ATC185 series also greatly expanded the ATC's popularity as a utility machine. A little known fact, the various crank shaft variations, cylinders, pistons and heads can be interchanged with enough research, in which the right combination can result in quite the performance increase! ![]() The ATC200, ATC200s, ATC200m and even the first generation 83-85 ATC200X all share a common engine design and in result have many interchangeable parts. This lineage also lends itself to the fact that Honda utilized their proven engine design for several displacement variations throughout the ATC line. A dramatic change from the stamped sheet metal frames of the 90s, 110s, and 125s, the 1980 ATC185 introduced for the first time a 185cc vertically up swept style engine surrounded by a full tube frame.īeing indirectly related to the XL/XR motorcycle lineage, the ATC185's engine shares a large amount of parts and design details with several generations of off road vehicles. you have 12 volts but low amps and that will happen. make sure your battery is good and charged. The ATC185 changed the face of three wheelers as we know them. sorry to say man but the decompression is automatic, and it is build in the cam. If you run it hard you can hole the piston. For as much as the Honda US90 started it all, the ATC185 could be considered the first milestone in Honda's development of the ATC model line of off road vehicles. ![]() If you run a very oily mixture it can make the engine run hot - it is similar to using fuel with too low an octane rating and the engine does not like it. You might as well get them to check the connecting rod for big and little end play. While you are at it ask them to inspect the cam and the rockers. Get some new guides (and valves if they say they're worn) and get the machine shop to fit the guides. Finding the ATV parts you need has never been easier, whether you need a power-producing ATV exhaust, upgraded fuel control for your quad or just a fresh new look with ATV plastics or a graphics kit. Then buy the size they tell you and get them to bore it.Īsk the machine shop to measure and inspect your valve stems. 1981 Honda ATC185S ATV Parts MotoSport has the parts and gear you need to keep you and your Honda ATC185S ATV in style and prime condition. When you decide to get a new piston take the jug to a proper machine shop you can trust and get it measured or you may buy the wrong piston. If you don't you will end up re-using worn out parts and all your effort will be for nothing. This stuff can be done by a novice but you need someone to help you with inspection and the machining jobs. I wouldn't try swapping just the piston - cylinder and piston as a set is okay. If you can see the play the guides and probably valves are worn. When you pull the head take off the valve springs and pull the valves out a few millimetres and wiggle them to see how much play there is. My guess is you will pull the cylinder off and the bore and piston will be scuffed badly. If it turns out one has a good bottom end / piston and the other has a good head, valves and cam then you may be able to make a good motor out of the bits. You might be able to swap bits from one engine to another but it does sound like both engines have issues. If it's burning oil it is going past the piston rings or down the valve guides - probably both. 1980-1986 Rebuilt Honda ATC 185S 200S TRX200 200 Cylinder Head Valves Engine. When i bought it it didnt smoke, and i got it home, changed and flushed old oil out, and the next time i got on it it started smoking and burnt up all the oil in about 4 hours and got so hot the dip stick started to melt! still runs after getting so hot so i dont think the heat messed anything up.
